“Together we can change the world, just one random act of kindness at a time” - Ron Hall. Kindness is defined by the quality of being generous, helpful, and caring about other people. Simple acts of kindness can impact lives everyday. Picture the feeling of being a recipient of an act of kindness. If everyone shared that feeling, what would the world be like?

Kindness is an act that most people have given and received. When interviewed, one scholar described feeling kindness as feeling “appreciated and loved”. Others simply stated that receiving kindness feels good. If love and goodness is free and nearly effortless to spread, why isn’t it spread more often?

One scholar shared that giving kindness also made them feel good, not limiting the benefits of acts of kindness to the recipient. But why don’t people make time to give the gift of happiness, especially since it satisfies both parties? The “make time” phrase is critical in the previous question. Most people would argue that being busy reduces how often they participate in an act of kindness. However, each scholar asked said they could improve even if they already show some kindness.

Increasing the amount of kindness in your life starts with shifting your perspective. Waking up in the morning thinking about all the good acts waiting to be enacted is a basic way to start being kinder. Train yourself to recognize situations where others are in need of help. Kindness doesn’t have to be buying someone a car, it could start as a simple smile. Smiling can make everyone a little happier. Complimenting someone is another easy way to improve someone’s day.

Kindness is a simple act, yet most believe it can change the world. All of the scholars I spoke with believe being more kind can have positive consequences. In the words of one scholar, “If everyone was just a little bit kinder than the world could be such a better place”. Spread some kindness today!
